 Earlier this week, India captured global attention when it became the first country to successfully soft-land on the Moon's South Pole.

The Indian Space Research Organization has come a long, long way since transporting assembly parts of rockets on bicycle backs in the 1960s.

Chandrayaan Trilogy

India has launched 3 rockets into the Moon's orbit thus far, of which the second one turned out to be barren when it lost contact with the operating team.

The Budget

Chandrayaan-1 (2008): ₹386 crore (US$52 million)

Chandrayaan-2 (2019): ₹978 crore (US$128 million)

Chandrayaan-3 (2023): ₹615 crore (US$75 million)

The combined budget of all three Chandrayaan missions was way cheaper than the combined budget of The Batman Trilogy by a baffling mark of US$330 million.

Life on Moon

Though all of these three missions were planned with somewhat different goals, a very strong common denominator was finding out whether human survivability was possible on the Moon's surface.

Chandrayaan 1

It aimed at surveying the geology of the Moon's surface using IR, X-ray and visible light, transmitted via a Moon Mineralogy Mapper designed by NASA, which found small amounts of water on the Moon's surface.

Though the mission was expected to last for 2 years, it was cut short when the probe lost contact with the control team after 10 months.

Chandrayaan 2

The second attempted mission to the Moon carried the Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover, and was launched on 22 July 2019. The probe reached the lunar orbit and was ready to land, when it unfortunately crashed due to a glitch in the software.

Chandrayaan 3

The third mission to the Moon proved to be fruitful when it successfully landed on the Moon's surface on August 23 2023. After the dust had settled on the surface, the lander opened its gates to let Pragyaan move around over the lunar surface. The rover will be active for 14 days during the sunlight period of the moon and will shut down for the next 14 days during the 'night' phase of the moon.
